Estrada Traded to Diamondbacks

In the first move of the winter meetings by the Atlanta Braves; the Braves traded catcher Johnny Estrada to the Arizona Diamondbacks for relief pitchers Oscar Villareal and Lance Cormier.

Scheurholz has been throwing Estrada's name out there. Houston and Colorado were mentioned as other possibilities but nothing came of it. I personally would have expected more in return for Estrada. Maybe Javier Vasquez? Remember 2 years ago when Millwood was traded for !who?! Johnny Estrada. I thought that deal was awful! Hopefully this will be another working of JS magic.

Estrada's reign as a Braves wasn't bad. In 2004 he had a breakout year resulting in an All-Star appearence. For 2005 much of the same was expected by Braves fans, but slacking performance and injuries caused Estrada to move down the depth chart.
I see this deal as being a dump off, Atlanta will now go full-time with McCann as the starter and I'm assuming Pena as backup. Although we might acquire a veteran sometime before spring training.

  • First off, cool site - it's nice to have a place to go to get some firsthand knowledge of a Phillies rival from someone who knows the Braves so well.

Second off, (it's off topic, sorry about that) I wanted to know what your personal take is on Marte. What kind of upside do you think he has and is he ready to start in the majors right now (maybe not for the Braves necessarily of course)?

To get a bit back on topic, why'd you gotta bring up Millwood for Estrada, man? That's cold. That deal was so damn exciting for Philly and it ended just about as bad for the Phils as possible. JS is really the man - have you checked out that book on the way the Braves handle their scouting...Scout's Honor, I think. It's a good read (this coming from a Phils fan...) and I'm sure a Braves fan would get a kick out of it.

  • Thanks for posting. Well I've been following Marte for about a year and a half now and he's been dominant at each level he's played at. Marte provides a solid glove and pop in the lineup that teams desire from a 3B. I think he could be a .290-.300BA/.400 OBP/.510 SLG.

Marte is ready for the majors. When he was called up last year, after the Francoeur explosion, many thought he would produce the same results, but you can't expect that out of everyone. Cox said he was a little off on his swing, but that can be worked on and he'll be fine.

BTW sorry to stir up the emotions, but Millwood came off the 18 win season and I thought he would just dominate with the Phillies. He's now finnally pitching better, and is rumored to be getting a big deal from the Mariners.

I've read pieces of Scout's Honor. I liked the story behind drafting Chipper over Todd Van Poppel.
