"My Prediction....Paaaiiinn.."

You might recognize that quote coming from Mr. T aka Chubber Lang in Rocky III. I think it's rather funny. The Braves stumbled along last night and blew the lead due to some costly errors. Has anyone else wondered what is up with LaRoche's facial hair? Did the razor get too dull? I predict tonight the Braves will turn it around with a win. Plenty of runs and great pitching all around.

  • Sorry for the delay in response, Blogger (especially the comments section) has been a huge pain over the past few days with all kinds of maintenance and technical difficulties. I figured I'd just answer you in your comment section since it's been a few days and the post you commented on in my site is now a bit buried - hope you don't mind.

Hamels started last Tuesday (as I’m sure you’ve figured out by now) with Brito scheduled to throw Thursday in place of Floyd. Interestingly enough, as Hamels pitched his way to his first major league win last night, Gavin Floyd pitched a complete game gem of his own for AAA Scranton. Combine that with Ryan Madson’s solid start against Arizona today and the plot really thickens when it comes to who will be the odd man out as the Phillies make decisions on their young pitching.

It’s very hard to argue against Tom Gordon as best Phillie of the year thus far…other candidates would have to be Ryan Howard, Chase Utley, and Brett Myers…with Pat Burrell and Bobby Abreu also receiving votes. The Phillies top end guys have really produced this year so far…but I may just be overly optimistic after the Phillies fantastic sweep of the Diamondbacks (Cory Lidle beating Brandon Webb on Monday, Cole Hamels dominance yesterday, and Ryan Madson stepping it up today all improved my outlook of this team).

I’m with you 100% on your breakdown of the NL East race – I really believe that the Mets, Braves, and Phils will all be within a couple of games of each other come September. The Nationals and Marlins are teams that are out of the race and have been for a while, but each team has enough talent to play a factor come August/September…hopefully the Marlins don’t play the role of spoiler for the Phillies (they play Florida a ton in September).

The Braves definitely have the minor league depth to go after Greg Maddux if that is what they want to do…you gotta believe that the Cubs will be at least willing to talk trade come July. I think the Maddux rumors will really heat up in the coming weeks – teams like the Braves, Diamondbacks, Dodgers, Giants, Padres, and Angels all come to mind, with the Phillies being in the second group of teams (Red Sox, Yankees, Rangers, Phillies) all hovering as other options. I think any of the teams in the first group are more likely to land Maddux than any in the second, but you never know.

Oh yeah, one last thing - at Minorleagueball.com they are running a little feature entitled "You're the GM: Fixing the Braves Edition." Here's the link in case you are interested:
